Artist’s murals cover crumbling building while it waits for re-development

I wasn’t expecting to come across these fantastic Pier Head murals in a corner of Swanage on our visit to the beach. So I took the photo opportunity as advertised…

I have written out the words accompanying the murals:

About the Paintings on this building

Local artists Nina Camplin and Antonia Phillips painted these murals voluntarily as part of Purbeck Art Week 2007. The images depict an illusion of reality – the past, present and possible future of this site. The work will be here until the building is re-developed.

About this Building

The Pier Head building was constructed as a temporary mess hall in the late 1940’s. Used later as a wind surfing school, café and bingo hall, it was deemed unsafe for use in the 1990’s.
Although still a controversial site in Swanage, the long term owners are determined to gain permission for a landmark new building including gallery, restaurant and café bar.
